What to bring to a shelter during Hurricane Ian

The Tampa Bay area has been ordered to evacuate. Currently, it is not clear when people will be able to return. However, it's essential that you have a plan in place should you need to seek shelter.

There are limited spaces in a shelter. You don't want to be turned away and miss this last-minute chance. This is why you should have your supplies ready so you can bring them with you if needed. But what do you need to pack exactly?

  • Something comfortable to sleep on

  • Clothes

  • Small entertainment such as books and activities

  • Comfort items such as a fan, earplugs, covering for your eyes for sleeping, other hygiene, and medications

  • 1 gallon of water per person per day

  • Non-perishable snacks

There is limited space in a shelter, so be prepared to be in tight accommodations with several other families. Quiet hours are enforced in shelters and it is best to follow guidelines provided by your shelter.
